David Szmulewski being decorated for his service
Born in Kolo (Poland), David Szmulewski emigrated to Palestine in the early 1930s. There he joined the Palestinian Communist Party (PKP) and, because of his activities, was expelled back to Europe by British authorities. With the onset of the Spanish Civil War Szmulewski joined the International Brigade and fought in the Botwin company. Following the end of the war, he was interned in France and eventually deported by the Nazi to Auschwitz were he was a prominent member of the camp's underground.
