Victoria
VICTORIA-HOY MAS QUE NUNCA VICTORY-TODAY MORE THAN EVER [100 x 136cm] Josep Renau [1938]. Issued by the Subsecretariat of Propaganda. Renau's "Victory" poster, issued in 1938, may well commemorate the brief moment that spring when France opened its borders to allow the Republic to be partially resupplied with planes and other material. Note the planes that make up the poster's "V." Renau was also an experimental photographer and was particularly interested in photomontage. These influences are evident in the magic realist, almost solarized appearance of the aviator at the poster's lower left. Renau's success here at integrating the text and the graphic image is not unique among Spanish Civil War posters but it is relatively uncommon.
